Excerpt from The Golden Ass of ApuleiusWith him we shudder at the doing to death of Socrates by Meroe the witch, with him we come to the gates of Hypata, that jolly wonder town, feast with Byrrhena, flirt with Fotis, tricksiest of serving maids, and quake at the unnameable sorceries of Milo's wife, with him we lie shaking in the robbers' cave until our fear is exorcised by the graceful tale of Cupid and Psyche. It is a gallimaufry of intrigue, sorceries, bickerings and ravishments, savoured with gaiety and humour, told at the topmost pitch of skyscraping spirits, a book "writ in ecstasy."IIApuleius the African - (whether his prænomen was Lucius or whether this was added from the name of the hero of his romance is a matter for scholars and of small account) - was a native of Madaura, a town on the borders of the Roman provinces of Gaetulia and Numidia. Few definite facts of his life are known and these are only vouchsafed through the media of his literary remains. He was born probably about the end of the first quarter of the second century, of parents of good station, his father being a high municipal official, and as a boy he was sent to school at Carthage, the city that was later to pay him the highest honours in her power to give.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
