Excerpt from The Golden Ass of ApuleiusAthens was followed by a species of Grand Tour Alexandria, Phrygia, Samos, Thessaly, were each visited until, at length, he came to the fair, frail city of Corinth, beloved of the older gods and goddesses, the centre of many curious cults and religions. Apuleius' mind, youth ful, impressionable and superstitious, fell to the city's lures. His imagination was in¿amed and seduced by the mystic rites of Isis, and he offered an easy victim to the unscrupulous priesthood of the goddess, whose greedy fingers soon lightened her disciple's purse. Fed and stimulated with oriental mystery, he demanded more. Bent on penetrating the more awful mysteries of Osiris, he left Corinth and came to Rome. News of his wealth and of his credulity doubtless preceded him, he was initiated but his purse was drained, and Apuleius found himself under the painful necessity of recouping himself for his religious enthusiasms. He began to practise the law, and by this means amassed a sufficient fortune to enable him to proceed with his mystical inquisition.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
