Whether these letters are part of an actual correspondence - whether they were written under the circumstances indicated and addressed to the persons to whom they purport to be addressed - may give rise to some doubt. A careful consideration of the internal evidence will perhaps convince the reader that this feature of the work, too, is only a fiction - that "Mr. West, " and "Dr. Ellis, " and the rest, are no more real than "Mr. Greyson."
