Jonathan has gone to Vietnam to be a war photographer. A chance encounter takes him into a burning village and scenes of mayhem, and he gets the shot that might make his career. Only the horror is too great. He flees to Tokyo, to lose himself and to take different kinds of pictures: of streets and crowds and cherry blossom - and of a girl with whom he is no longer lost. But even here his history catches up with him: the photograph, his responsibility as a witness to war, and to other events buried in his past.
