Rather it inhered_in the circumstances of the time, as a part of the practical life of the day. It therefore cannot be discovered or outlined without tracing the history of the first Academies, grouping them and interpreting the Academy movement as a whole. Moreover the Academies did not appear suddenly without parentage, nor were they nourished alone by their own success. A_task in this dissertation is to interpret the history of the times in which the Academies arose, uncover the impulse that originated them, and trace the development of the Academy movement until it is well established. The problem therefore may be stated: What was the philosophy of education active in the founding and administration of the early american.aoademies?B. Delimitations.
