The History of the Lord Chancellors of Ireland

Excerpt from The History of the Lord Chancellors of Ireland: From A. D. 1186 to A. D. 1874HE Lord Chancellors of Ireland had, from the conquest by Henry II. Until the close of the reign Of Edward III., in 1377, a wide jurisdiction in this country. Thenceforward, and all through the reign of Richard 11, and during the long contests between the Houses of York and Lancaster, the power of England here declined, and at the opening of the reign of Henry VIII. There was nothing left of English dominion in Ireland beyond the narrow limits of the Pale, which extended from Dundalk on the north to Dalkey on the south, forty seven miles asunder, and from Dublin to Kilcock on the west, fifteen miles. The jurisdiction of the Chancellors, as a matter of course, extended no farther, save to a few English colonies in Wexford, Waterford, Cork, and Galway.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
