In' 1796, by an arrangement between the Crown and the east-india Company, the armies of India were placed on the footing on which they now stand, which was an important supplementary measure to complete the constitution of government so esta blished, and thus it remained without change until the completion of twenty years from the date of passing the Consolidated Act of 1793.
