Excerpt from The International Numismata Orientalia: Coins of Arakan, of Pegu, and of BurmaCoined money was not used in ancient times in the countries of Indo China. In Arakan coins were first struck for the purposes of currency, and as a declaratory act of sovereignty, towards the end of the sixteenth, or the beginning of the seventeenth, century of the Christian era. The system was then adopted from that existing in Bengal under the Muhammadan kings. But coins bearing religious symbols had been issued independently by the local princes in earlier times. It is not now practicable to do more than indicate the dynasty under which these symbolical coins were struck. The immediate occasion of the issue, under foreign in¿uence, of coins by the kings of Arakan, is related in the chronicles of that country.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
