Excerpt from The Interregnum The scope of this book is fully explained in the Introduction, the circumstances of its writing are of little interest, except as partly excusing mistakes of quotation and reference that may be found. It is the result of some years' thought, but it was written in the spare time of a busy existence, and away from libraries and all but a few books. I have tried not to misrepresent anyone's statements and opinions, and apologise if I have unwittingly done so.
