Excerpt from The Life and Genius of Shakespeare
It certainly is not from a want of biographers or of critics that any mystery still hangs over Shakespeare's memory. N 0 other writer, perhaps, that ever lived has been the object of half so much minute, and patient, and varied research. The very multiplicity, combined with the incompleteness of the details which the antiquaries have discovered, has in no small degree contributed to complicate and to darken the very elements upon which any judgment we may form of him must be founded.
