Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Thomas À Becket, Vol. 2 of 2: Now First Gathered From the Contemporary Historians
This was the position of things, when it he came necessary for both parties to send delegates to Rome, where the court was now held, in pro secution Of the appeal of the bishops. A splendid embassy was accordingly sent from England, to represent the king, the bishops, and others who were concerned in the controversy. On the part of the archbishop were sent some of his clerks, and we may fully believe the historian, who says that they had no gold nor silver to take'with them as presents, and that they hardly carried more than was sufficient for their journey.
