It has been prepared (and this the critical reader will easily detect) at different times, and in the brief intervals of leisure which professional work allows. Its composition has been a source of enjoyment in contrast with the uniformity of my daily labour, and I can truly say that when the last page was written, I was very sorry that my literary recreation was at an end. It is not as easy to define my reasons for printing what was thus written, especially as I have not adapted it in some respects to publication, having left it in the shape of a private memoir.
