Some of these, following the commercial instinct of the family, emigrated to America, and there realised fortune and position. One son, Gyles, maintained the family name at home. As a shipowner, he shared in the prosperity that attended Lancaster in her extensive sugar trade and other commercial relations. He has been described as handsome in person, and a thorough-bred man of business yet, like other men of bold enterprise, he was not uniformly successful in his commercial undertakings.
