Over-emphasis in writing is a distinctive vice of the age, though not one with which the present writer is conscious of much affinity. This, at least, he strongly feels: that nowhere would it be more out of place to overstep the moderation of fact than in writing of such a man as Wauchope - one who was in his nature modest and of fine reserve, to whom anything approaching to advertisement would have been even more distasteful than to the average gentle man. The writer therefore restricts himself to stating with dispassion, in a spirit as of science, the fact which stands and is deserving record, that Scotland mourned for Wauchope as for one of the best-loved and most sorely missed of all her sons.
