Excerpt from The Life of Napoléon BuonaparteThis second victory failed to accomplish the subjection of all the constituted authorities of the State. A vast majority of the National Assembly had rejoiced in the destruction of the Bastile, and many deputies looked with complacency on the failure of royal authority, but the two parties were as yet merely fellow-workers in the same cause and, although united as to the object, they were divided as to the means. On the 2d November the Assembly declared the possessions of the Church the property of the nation, in the following month decreed their confiscation, and on the 13th February, 1790, proclaimed the abolition of religious orders and mo nastic vows.
