Excerpt from The Medieval Literature of Western Europe: A Review of Research, Mainly 1930-1960A word about the terminal dates is in order: 1930 appeared to be an appropriate terminus ab quem partly because the 19305 wit nessed new approaches to medieval scholarship in several countries, but also because the 19305 marked the end of an era in American education. Until that time it had been customary for most serious American scholars to study for a period in British or European universities. After the 19308, first the great depression and then the war brought study in Europe nearly to an end, with a consequent diminution of the firsthand familiarity with European scholars and scholarship that had characterized the first third of the century. Only in the last few years has this communication been actively resumed. In 1957, when this volume was planned, December 1960 was agreed upon as the date for submission of printer's copy. Some of the chapters actually were submitted by that date. But a collabora tive work must wait upon its last chapter. Authors grew ill or were translated to deanships and had to be replaced. Others continued to work ahead, but slowly. It was September 1964 before all of the chapters were finally in hand. The terminal date for the research covered therefore runs between 1960 and 1964, depending upon when each author closed his books.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
