Excerpt from The Moral Conquest of GermanyMy Swiss citizenship - the greatest good luck of my life - makes me independent in dealing with German questions. The Nazis cannot rob me, and I have no intention of living in Germany. Thus I am free from those personal interests which today prompt so many German émigre's to plead for a democratic postwar Germany. These would-be democrats criticized my comments on the German lust for revenge as far back as 1930 (while the Nazis published a book The Case of Emil Ludwig).I frankly admit that I do not believe there are forces 1n Germany today which might be able to build another republic, I have watched too closely the German boycott of spiritual and intellectual values by German scholars - a boycott which brought about the destruction of the Weimar republic. Moreover, I frankly admit that world peace seems to me to be a greater issue than German prosperity.I regret that among the numerous critics of the German nation who share my point of view there are few who are interested in the cul tural side of the German mind. For thirty years I have tried to dis seminate the knowledge of these very treasures. In this book their sp1r1t 1s offered as the basis for a German postwar education. Their devaluation would serve the world as little as would a dismemberment of Germany. To my mind the economic conquest of postwar Germany is secondary to its moral conquest - and this moral conquest is definitely possible. But through nothing less than a temporary extinction of German politi cal independence will this all-important moral rebirth of the German nation be accomplished.ewes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
