Excerpt from The Municipal History of the Borough of Leeds: In the County of York, From the Earliest Period to the First Mayor Under the Provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act, on the 1st January, 1836HE author, or more properly the compiler of this volume, may perhaps be thought presumptuous in laying his gleanings of the Municipal Antiquities of the Borough of Leeds before the public, when so many histories, from the ponderous folios of Thoresby and Whita ker, to the minor yet no less valuable ones, which have at vari ous times issued from the press, are already in circulation. But it may be observed, that the greatest part of the informa tion contained in the following pages, having been locked up in the Records of the Corporation, is not to be found in any other history extant, this being (with the exception of a few historical notices occasionally scattered through the work a history of the Corporation only, and a large portion of it necessarily consisting of extracts from the Court Books.
