Excerpt from The Names of Those Persons Who Subscribe Towards the Defence of This Country at the Time of the Spanish Armada, 1588, and the Amounts Each Contributed: With Historical Introduction
To this valuable record, to Froude, Motley and others of our modern historians who have carefully digested the State Papers, a reference must be made for a history of the fighting, and all the exciting incidents attending it. Suffice to say here that on the 21st (31) July the Lord Admiral had proclaimed war from his pinnace The Defiance3 that Sir Francis Drake gave a slap in the face to the enemy, by not only taking a Spanish Galleon with all on board, including something like ducats, but had actually captured Don Pedro de Valdez himself, a man of great estimation with the King of Spayne, and thought next in his army to the Duke of Sidonia 3 that fighting lasted on the 23rd July (august 2nd) from morning till night, when, says Camden, there was never more lightening and thundering of the artillery than there was on both sides, and yet only one man was killed, on the side of the English, and he died glorious in his own barque in the midst Of the enemy. The sharpest engagement took place on the 25th (august 4) in view of the Isle Of Wight 3 the next day the Spaniards sailed up channel, hoping to meet Parma and his promised aid, but Lord Henry Seymour had already taken up a position to prevent Parma leaving his own country 3 and a few hours later the enemy anchored off Calais.
