Excerpt from The Natural History of Man: And the Rise and Progress of Philosophy
It may appear strange that so long a time (about fifty years) has passed since the first appearance of the lectures comprised in this volume, and that a second edition should only now be brought out. It may be explained in part that the first edition was published by subscription of those who heard the lectures delivered, and so the volumes passed into private libraries and were not put into circulation through booksellers, the present publication is called for by former pupils and devoted admirers of Mr. Kinmont, who desire to preserve this monument of his genius which he himself created.
The rapid movements of the world in all departments of thought, the changes of opinion and sentiment in doctrinal theology and in philosophy, have not distanced nor superseded the ideas herein presented , they belong to the present generation as much as to the past. Founded upon experience and observation of the facts of history, they were illumined by principles and truths which flowed from his inner consciousness, and in themselves are eternal.
The lectures were prefaced by an extempore exordium of nearly an hour, which seemed to be the resume of all the thoughts which flowed into his mind during the preparation of the lectures, of which the written lecture was hut the condensation.
