Excerpt from The New American Cyclopaedia, Vol. 4: A Popular Dictionary of General Knowledge, Brownson-ChartresBru edward, Lord, a Scottish j udge and politician, tu in 1549, died Jan. 14, 1611. In 1594 he was sent to remonstrate with Queen Elizabeth on the countenance she gave to the earl of Bothwell, and though she would not de liver Bothwell u she compelled him to leave her dominions. N 1598 he went a second timc to England on an unsuccessful mission to induce Elizabeth to acknowledge J ames VI. As her successor. In 1601, having again gone to Eng land with the earl of Mar, to intereede for the ill-fated earl of Essex, and arriving after his execution, they adroitly converted their mis sion of supplication into one congratulating Elizabeth on her escape from the conspiracy. Owing to the judicious conduct of Bruce, the undisputed accession of J ames on the death of Elizabeth took place. Bruce, knighted and created Baron Bruce of Kinloss, accompanied James to England in 1608, and was made privy councillor and master of the rolls.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
