The New-England Historical and Genealogical Register

Excerpt from The New-England Historical and Genealogical Register: Index of Persons, Volumes 1-50, A-GWithin a year from its incorporation the Society leased a room from the City of Boston in a building recently erected near the City Hall at the corner of City Hall Avenue and Williams Court, and now occupied as a police station. This room was at the rear of the third ¿oor, had three windows looking out into the Court, and was twenty-two feet long by seventeen feet wide. In this room on January 15, were deposited the books, pamphlets and manuscripts which formed the nucleus of the Society's Library and which up to that time had been in the possession of the several directors. A single book-case was sufficient to hold the entire library and, had the Society then possessed one copy of each Ameri can publication devoted wholly to genealogy, a single shelf would have been ample for that division of its library. Up to this date there had been but little interest manifested in genealogy in America, and the occasional visitor in quest of data relating to American families found no indexes, demanded none, and needed none, for a few hours sufficed to examine page by page all the printed work on the subject.During the year 1845 various suggestions for publications were considered by the Society and by special committees appointed for the purpose, and on January 17, 1846, two days after the actual founding of the Library, action was taken by the Society which resulted in the establishment of The new-england Historical and Genealogical Register. The first number was issued on February 5.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
