Excerpt from The North Carolina Historical Review, Vol. 5: January-October, 1928At the annual session in 1878 it was resolved to hold monthly meetings for the accommodation of those who had papers to read. This suggested to the Secretary, John Snow, a successful business man, the feasibility of publishing a monthly periodical entitled the Alabama Historical Reporter, containing the minutes or proceedings of the Society and such other materials as might be pertinent. The project turned out to be fairly successful. Snow guaranteed the expense of publication and Walter Guild did the editorial work. Under these auspices the Reporter was extensively circulated throughout the country and soon brought the Society in touch with those of other states. Many valuable periodicals and publications were received in exchange from the societies of Massachusetts, New York, Wisconsin, Virginia, Ten nessee and Georgia.But this success was of no long duration. By the end of 1885 the Historical Reporter had ceased to appear even at irregular intervals, and attendance at the monthly meetings of the Society had reached the vanishing point.
