Excerpt from The North-West Peninsula of Iceland: Being the Journal of a Tour in Iceland in the Spring and Summer of 1862
My principal object in making a second journey to Iceland, which country I first visited in company with Mr. Holland in 1861, was to explore the North-West Peninsula and the Vatna Jokull. I believe that the exploration of the first of these districts had never been attempted by any traveller previous to the journey of which a brief account is given in this volume, nor had that of the second until Mr. Holland and I made an attempt to ascend the Oræfa Jokull.
