Excerpt from The Old Ludgings of Stirling: Being the Ancient Residences of the Nobility, Clergy, and Civic Dignitaries Not Hitherto Delineated and DescribedThe re¿ection in turning over the leaves of a sketch book of 1850 that of so many buildings and objects therein delineated, so few had survived, and farther, that many others of architectural merit and historical or picturesque interest existed in the more obscure streets, wynds, and courts in the old parts of the town which had never been delineated and described, induced me to search out and continue the series of sketches which I now venture to bring before the public.These were sketched from time to time in the spare evenings, and I have endeavoured to Show not merely the picturesque features of each subject, but also the more characteristic architectural details, and to include all the interesting remains which have not hitherto been illustrated.The descriptions were given in a condensed form in a paper I read before a meeting of our local Natural History Society, when the original sketches in pen and ink were exhibited, and the whole is now published in the hope that it will prove interesting to my fellow townsmen, and also form a permanent record of these buildings, which in the ordinary course of things must soon disappear.In cases of doubtful identity, I have increased the number of these illustrations, to assist future enquirers.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
