Excerpt from The Ontario Township
In working with my class at Canadian Constitutional History, I became aware that one of my pupils, Mr. J. M. Mcevoy, possessed a more than usual knowledge of the practical working of the township system, and that the occu patiou of township officers by his father and grandfather during a long' period of years had given him, as it were, an hereditary interest in the subject. I sug gested that it might be useful if he would attempt to sketch the' history and working of the township system in the district he knew best, as a contribution to the early constitutional history of Ontario, as a help to the solution of the difficulties yet remaining in local government, and as an indication to those out side Canada, interested in popular self-government, of a system of administration in some of its features altogether unique. Mr. Mcevoy spent his vacation in perusing the early documents of the old London district, in consulting venerable seniors who could tell him of the state of things fifty or sixty years ago, and in the study of the statute book and the result is now laid before the reader.
