Excerpt from The Parish Registers of Kirkburton, Co, York, Vol. 1In publishing the Parish Registers of Kirkburton from 1541 to 1754, a few notes on the ecclesiastical and civil history of the place, prior to the commencement of the Registers, are now recorded, taking Dr. Morehouse's excellent History of Kirhburton as the perfect structure to which a few internal fittings are added to illustrate life in times past. The presence of the crucifix, found broken in the rubble, and now carefully preserved in the present chancel, takes time back probably to the earliest Christian era in Britain, to the fourth century, when Christianity was adopted as the religion of the Roman Empire, and when the most solemn rite at that time was the erection of the Cross with prayer wherever a church was to be built. The fact that the body on the Crucifix appears to have a long garment, gives it a much earlier date than those with the body almost denuded. A still stronger mark of its early.date is that the hair is Byzantine in its arrangement. This goes back to the Yorkshireman, Constantine the Great, who made his capital city, Byzantium, a city of churches and crucifixes, and who sent over skilled Byzantine workmen to Britain to instruct his country men in all the civilization of the East. The structure that would be erected at this time as a place of worship would be like the one at Glastonbury, the walls of which were made of twigs twisted together, the roof being of straw, hay, or rushes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
