Excerpt from The Paston Letters: A Selection Illustrating English Social Life in the Fifteenth CenturyThis volume contains a small proportion of the large number of "Paston Letters, " which were for the most part written by various members of the family of Paston, in Norfolk, during the reigns of Henry the Sixth, Edward the Fourth, Richard the Third and Henry the Seventh.The intention of this selection from the mass of the Letters is to illustrate as far as possible the daily life and the customs of the time in which they were written. So many vivid and homely pictures are seen through their medium, that it is hoped that the reader will be attracted by the familiar detail thus presented to search further in the mine of wealth represented by complete editions of the Letters.The dates of the Letters selected are from 1440 to 1485, and they are placed in chronological order mainly according to the arrangement in Fenn's edition.
