Excerpt from The Pleasures of Reading: An Address Delivered at St. Andrews University December 10, 1887It has probably not been the lot of many of my predecessors in the distinguished post to which you have elected me, to deliver a Rectorial Address under circumstances more adverse to the deliberate reflection and the careful preparation which such a performance requires.
