Several pieces in the first collection, which the Public have sanctioned by a long and generous approbation, were written before the publication of the 'Farmer's Boy, ' and consequently before I had friends to thank, or failures to dread. The original MSS. of these Poems are now in my possession, and I find therein, that seven years ago, I made memorandums which are now useful.
