Excerpt from The Proclamation of Freedom: A Sermon Preached in Dorchester, January 4, 1863
Friends, I offer no apology for making the event referred to the theme of my discourse to-day. Indeed, I could do no otherwise. It has to me a sacred importance, a holy signifi cance. God is in it. His providence has wrought it out. Not by the will of man, but of God, has it come. Christ is in it, - He Who was sent to preach deliverance to the captives.
