Excerpt from The Proper Office and Spirit of the Ministry: A Sermon Preached Before the Society of the Alumni of the Theological Seminary of Virginia, and Published by Request of the Society Some things in the address of St. Paul to the elders of the church of Ephesus, are proper to the time and occa s10n of its original delivery. But it is not difficult to generalise the topics, and separate what is peculiar to the original speaker and hearers of the charge, and give our attention to those things ln it which are common to all ministers of the gospel. The spirit of St. Paulon this occasion is one which ought to be possessed by all minis-r ters of it. The proper office of the ministry is also stated to testify the gospel of the grace of God 3 for this lan guage is exegetical of the preceding phrase, the minis try which I have received of the Lord Jesus. Imay readily excuse myself from discussing on this occasron the constitution of the Christian ministry, for that sub ject is with me in these walls official, and I appear among you simply as a brother in the fellowship of the alumm of this Seminary. Besides, one may be pardoned for thinking that the subject does not lack sufficient attention in our time.
