They seemed sufficiently popular to justify their republication in a somewhat enlarged and corrected shape. They are still confessedly ih complete, but they may help to preserve some re cord of earlier phases of public-school life, the very traditions of which are growing fainter year by year. Printed authorities have been freely used. Those which were found most useful, especially such as are of modern date, are named before each School. The valuable and cordial help which I have re ceived not only from friends, but from many who were previously strangers, is one of the most plea sant recollections of what has been, to the writer at least, a very interesting investigation. The reader will be indebted for any interest he may find in these pages as much to my correspondents as myself.
