It was only after a great struggle that recovery took place, and this brought about, I think, by good nursing, by careful attention to food and stimulants, by thorough dry-cupping, and by considerable doses of chloride of ammonium, whiskey, and digitalis. Towards the end, we gave nitro - glycerin, and at the beginning, in consideration of the feeble action of the heart, strychnine. Yet I cannot say that the effects of these drugs were very obvious.
