Whilst Charles could not command the services of a single Scottish soldier, the armed retainers of the nobility and the parochial organization of the Scotch Church system supplied materials for a sudden and universal revolt. The new Prayer book caused the explosion. It was to Scotland both a national insult and a religious abomination.
