It has been the endeavour of its writer to compress into the space allotted to him an account of the cause, the origin, the history, and the constituents of those important means of transit, and though he has not been able to enter into the subject as he could wish, and does not pretend, with engineering skill, to instruct those better informed on the subject than himself, he yet trusts that all the infor mation which is necessary to make any person acquainted with the progress and origin of railways will be found in his little volume. All the best authorities that were necessary for fulness and accuracy.
