Excerpt from The Realms of the Egyptian Dead According to the Belief of the Ancient EgyptiansAccording to the text, this deluge which covered the trees and drove the Sun-god to the mountains came up from beneath, as the Egyptians supposed to be the case with the Nile ¿ood. A similar story was probably at the source of the Platonic dialogue Timaeus, in which Egyptian authori ties are often quoted. There it is used as an argument to deny the ¿ooding of the world and the destruction of its inhabitants - so far, at least, as Egypt is concerned. For, according to Plato, it was by similar ¿oods in other lands that towns perished, and only the herdsmen were saved in Egypt, however, neither then nor at any other time did water ¿ow down from above upon the fields, it came up from below, and hence it was that in Egypt were preserved the memorials of ancient times.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
