Before they were shipped abroad they were made secure in such places as the Tolbooth of Edinburgh, but when in active service on foreign soil they could not be so effectually looked after, and, as the Register testifies, they deserted in hundreds. If they had gone against their will, the conditions under which they fought were not such as to reconcile them to their fate. Unpaid, illffed, and ill-clothed, they had little heart to fight in a war in which they had nothing at stake. N o sooner, says Mr Gardiner of an English regiment which had landed near Bremen, no sooner had they set foot on shore than they deserted in tr00ps of a hundred or two at a time, to hire themselves out to other masters who knew the value of a soldier.
