Excerpt from The Renovation of Politics: A Discourse Delivered in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lionville, Chester County, Pa., On the Evening at January 4th, 1861We have been accustomed betimes to regard our government as a perfect system. In some respects this Opinion may be cor. Rect. But that it is not in all, is apparent from the machinery Of the government, the present aspect of politics, and the legislation to which freemen are compelled to submit. The landmarks which our fathers set up are removed. Sectional ambition, jealousies, and other causes, have alienated a few of the states from the others, and the Union itself is threatened with dismemberment. There is, then, something deficient in the government and laws, their execution or administrators, or all together. Something requires to be renovated.
