State Capacity Building in Contemporary China

This volume explores the governing strategy of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in the light of the argument of authoritarian regime resilience. The CCP’s continuous efforts to normalize party relations with the state is a crucial aspect in the efforts to understand the resilience of its one-party system. While authoritarian regime resilience has become the mainstream argument in the studies of contemporary Chinese politics, this volume stands out as it offers a comprehensive view of the Chinese party-state. The research presented here is built on the analysis of authentic datasets and materials, and examines the CCP’s relations with various state organs in the Chinese political system, mainly administrative organs, legislature (the People’s Congress), and judicial branch (the People’s Court), as well as the military (the People’s Liberation Army) and state-owned enterprises. Further, focusing on the political system, a fundamental concept in the field of comparative politics, and analyzing China as a one-party system, one of the categories of authoritarian regimes, this volume attempts to bring China closer to a comparable case study in political science, even if it is a very different case from the others.
