On application to the English government, letters patent were issued to John Archer on November I 3, 1671. He was to pay a customary annual quit rent, to consist of twenty bushels of good pears. The document describes the tract of land as lying to the eastward of Harlem River where ye new dorp or Village is erected known by the name of Ford ham.
