Eye Brother Horn

Angebote / Angebote:

Southern African literary fiction is having a moment (see: The Promise, The Old Drift) and so is African magical realism (see: Children of Blood and Bone, She Would Be King, Freshwater). The combination of the two here, rooted in an exploration of South Africa's complex colonial past and deeply-ingrained racial discrimination from two highly authentic and endearing protagonists, renders this book both a strong contender for literary awards and mainstream attention, and a welcome addition to post-colonial studies.Bridget Pitt has been long- and shortlisted for a number of big prizes, and this is her North American debut. The book is expertly imbued with Zulu folklore and vocabulary, in a way that does not exoticize or embellish. The author navigates complicated racial and social nuances in a gentle manner, exploring both the main character Moses' subordinate position to his white brother Daniel in his family and his privilege respective of other black characters in the book, as well as both boys' subordinate position to the older male figures of the book. What results is a quiet but clear-eyed commentary on masculinity and racial inequality, giving Eye Brother Horn the makings of a modern South African classic alongside The Power of One and Cry, the Beloved Country. Reviews and awards consideration for our most recent literary magical realism title, The Theory of Flight, have been among out best, and early reviews for its sequel are equally promising. Audience: While this novel is a coming-of-age story, it is primarily for Adult and New Adult audiences. The environmental and animal conservation elements of the book tie strongly with our other title for the season, Pearl of the Sea, which will lend itself well to marketing for both books.
