Excerpt from The Semitic Permansive-Perfect: A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of Arts in the University of Toronto to Obtain the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The subject has attracted a number of scholars, and the most diverse Opinions have been held.1 The chief points at issue have been the relation which exists between the Permansive and the ordinary Semitic verb-forms, and the bearing which this has on the development of those forms, and on philology in general. The subject is one of considerable intricacy, many parts of it lie within 'the region of conjecture, and a student does well if he attempts no long, airy flights, but tests his theory at each stage of its develop ment by its power to organize and explain the actual phenomena of language: thus alone will he e able to keep his feet on solid ground.
