Excerpt from The Service Record, 1919: Le Journal Des Exploits Du Compagnie C. 303rd Field Signal Battalion, American Expeditionary Force
The first day was spent in getting beds, bed sacks, blankets and comforts, filling the bed sacks with straw and setting up and cleaning up the barracks and grounds.
The beds were folding iron cots with springs. They seemed to us to be a very poor excuse for beds after just coming from civil life, but oh! What a luxury they would have been in France. Where we had mud, stone, boards or manure for bedsz - the only springs being the wet weather springs that make northern France a beautiful expanse of mud.
