Excerpt from The Shifting SpellJames, the eldest brother, evaded any prolonged mortification of mind (and lightened the present nar rative) by dying within less than five months of Douglas' entry into Whitridge Grange. Although his death lightens the present narrative, the reader will be sorry to learn that James had contrived to complicate matters by leaving a very young step daughter - Janet Ranford (age, five years) - as sole heiress of his estate, which latter consisted of noth ing save some miserable house property, of less value than £50 a year. Fortunately, however, Douglas' eldest sister, Miss Augusta Stranghurst, had a mania for undertaking special duties, the good dame therefore at once took Charge of the helpless orphan child, and it is to be hoped that the reader will con done James' conduct in having brought this kind hearted lady into prominence because she is about to play a conspicuous part in the history of Whitridge Grange.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
