The Shirburn Ballads

Angebote / Angebote:

Excerpt from The Shirburn Ballads: 1585-1616 Throughout the ms. It is plain that the ballads are copied from printed exemplars. Thus, the copyist constantly changes his writing from English characters to Roman where the printed copies would make the same change, as in proper names, refrains, and the like. Interesting problems, but impossible to solve, are (i) to determine why the copyist set himself to write out' so much printed matter, and (ii) whence he got' the necessary Broadsides. Several possibilities suggest themselves. He may have borrowed Black-letter sheets from a wide circle of friends, or he may have rented a house whose owner had papered the walls with them. It will be remem bered that at Gloucester, in 1635, John Aubrey (brief Lives, ii. 249) saw the engraved description of Sir Philip Sidney's funeral doing duty as a chimney-piece.
