To the left could be seen the waters of Gowanus Bay, widening to the distant Bay of New York. Across the creek, the land rose to hills, extend ing northeasterly as far as the eye could see, grassy and in places tree-topped - the penin sula of Brooklyn Heights. Before the house, across the road, there bubbled a spring of clear water. This spring, no doubt, determined the location of the home stead.
