The Story of the Psalters

Excerpt from The Story of the Psalters: A History of the Metrical Versions of Great Britain and America From 1549 to 1885The Reformers, John Huss, Jerome of Prague, the Bohemian Brethren, and Martin Luther, published certain of the Psalms in German metre for the use of the common people, that priests might not be wanted. They did not attempt an entire Psalter, the Lutherans were satisfied with a selection of the Psalms interspersed with their hymns. The only entire metrical version which at all compares with the English was the French Psalter of Marot and Beza. Its history is interesting, not only on account of its superior literary merit, but because the tunes which accompanied it were adapted, in numerous instances, to the English Psalms, by Day, Este, and Ravenscroft, and still continue in use, having long outlived the rhymes to which they were set. Innocents, St. Michael's, and the Old Hundredth are now sung by all people that on earth do dwell, in popular con gregational worship.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
