Excerpt from The Stowe Missal, Vol. 2: Ms. D. II. 3 in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin
Some small ornamental initials have already been mentioned (p. Xiv). The only other decoration in the Missal is on the first page, which has a large rectangular initial P, together with a border inclosing the text on the other three sides. The colours employed in both initial and border are rather dingy red, yellow and brown. The initial is filled with a form of the key pattern ornament, familiar in the Book of Kells, the Lindisfarne Gospels, 1 the Gospels of St. Chad, and other remains of early Celtic art, combined with lozenges and Spirals. The border presents a striking analogy with that on the first page of St. Luke in the last two of the mss. Named. At the top, facing the initial, is the head of a cat, the hindquarters of which, with legs and tail, are at the lower extremity, the rest of the body being represented by horizontal and vertical panels containing a running pattern of swans with an edging of narrow bands. In the Lindisfarne Gospels the cat's head is at the lower extremity, and the treatment of the hindquarters here is more like that in St. Chad's Gospels, where the rectangular initial Q also contains key-pattern panels.
