The Sutherland Estate, 1850-1920

Angebote / Angebote:

From the mid-nineteenth century to the end of WWI, the Sutherland Estate was the largest landed estate in all of western Europe. At 1.1 million acres, the ducal family could claim most of the county of Sutherland, as well as another 30, 000 acres in England, and the dukes of Sutherland were among the richest patrician landowners of the period. In the early nineteenth century, however, the family became known as great clearance landlords, something that came back to haunt them in subsequent decades. This book studies the workings of estate management and policy formation in the face of Sutherland's crofting tenants, land reform, and government agenciesm, and asks whether the ducal family experienced the same decline and fall experienced by the British aristocracy during the same period. It also examines a crucial period of Highland history from the unusual perspective of an estate.
